The first in a series of blogs about our RTÉ Player International service from the RTÉ team

By now fans of Irish Television abroad have started to get to grips with our brand new RTÉ Player International app which is bringing over 500 hours of Irish TV to users outside of Ireland. If you’re living abroad with even the slightest interest in what’s going on back home and you’re not using the app on your iPad or iPhone, then you need to head over to rte.ie/playerinternational and your App Store right now and hit that big download button.
As a team we’re all really excited by the launch of the app as we’re finally able to increase the amount of Irish programmes available to users around the world. We’ve been working on this for quite a while now and are really delighted that it’s finally out there.
One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced while putting the app together has been securing international rights to all of the different programmes that we’d like to share with our international users. We’re doing our best to make as much Irish TV available around the world as we can, but international rights can be tricky to secure!
You may now ask a big (and obvious) question: “The programme was already on RTÉ… Can’t you just do what you like with it?”. Well, just because a programme aired on RTÉ One or RTÉ2 doesn’t mean we can show it on the International app. There are issues around rights whenever you want to offer copyrighted media somewhere new and so lots or brand new contracts have had to be drawn up and agreed to by all parties – never an easy task in the TV business! Unfortunately, sometimes pre-existing contracts exist which prevent us from offering a particular series on the app at this time.
You may also notice that a series is available on RTÉ Player International in one country but unavailable in another country. This happens due to a pre-existing rights agreement in that territory which may mean we have to hold back a series from there. Unfortunately this is the reality of offering up an app like this to the global market and we try to ensure as many as possible of our programmes appear wherever you are around the world.
We will be adding more programmes and series all the time and as new contracts are agreed by the copyright holders, you’ll begin to see even more of your favourite faces on the app. You can sign up for updates on content coming soon on www.rte.ie/playerinternational.
We’d really love to hear what you think of the programmes already on the app and what you’d most like to see showing up in the future. You’re our users and it makes sense to work on getting rights for what you want. Use the in-app contact form or email PlayerInternational.Feedback@rte.ie.
