Further increasing the reach of RTÉ’s news, weather and radio services, RTÉ today announce the launch of RTÉ skills on Amazon Alexa, the cloud-based voice service that powers Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and other devices. As one of the first to integrate Irish skills on Alexa, RTÉ has partnered with Ireland’s National Meteorological Service, Met Éireann and the IBI, which represents Ireland’s 34 local, regional and national commercial radio stations. The new skills available are RTÉ News, Nuacht, Weather in association with Met Éireann and Irish Radio Player in association with IBI.
Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Plus are hands-free devices designed around your voice—just ask to get answers to questions, play music, read the news, set timers and much more. Alexa is the brain that powers Echo devices, and features many ‘skills’, similar to apps, which add additional capabilities to Alexa. From today Amazon Echo and Alexa are now available in Ireland, meaning Irish customers now have the ability to access the brand new RTÉ skills. Get the latest Irish News, Nuacht and weather or play Irish radio as Alexa lets you voice-control your world.
Launching the RTÉ skills on Alexa today, Aisling McCabe, Director of Strategic Platforms and Partnerships, RTÉ said: “RTÉ is consistently exploring new technologies, creating digital content and exploring future digital possibilities, including new journalism formats and platforms for RTÉ to reach its audiences in new and innovative ways. These new skills on Amazon Alexa further extend the reach of RTÉ services”
The four skills will be accessible for free on Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus and other Alexa-enabled devices. Customers can enable the RTÉ skill via the Alexa app. Find out more about RTÉ’s Alexa skills at www.rte.ie/voice
